WHAT’S IN THE BAG:

NYFW: The Backstage Beauty at Thom Browne Fall 2013

Thom Browne Fall 2013

The third floor of Center 548 could have been mistaken for the dressing rooms of a major theatrical production… or maybe that’s exactly what it was. On one side of an intensely long arrangement of tables was the Bumble and Bumble hair station where fine tooth combs went up and down in harmony building levels of volume that would make Marie Antoinette heights look tame. Across the row, faces were going pale, pretty much porcelain, by an army of MAC make up artists being lead by Sil Bruinsma. Sil took a minute to explain how the look came about for Thom Browne‘s regal collection and the basis was fantasy.

NYFW: Ruffian Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Show (+ finale video)

For the Spring/Summer 2013 show, Ruffian wanted to explore their love of couture within the context of Williamsburg, Brooklyn where they live. While the word couture didn’t come to mind when watching the models walk down the runway, it did make me reminiscent of my years living on Bedford Avenue. Sure, their were hipster elements – skinnies with oversized top,  printed pants, skirts and tops, (and all matched with Converse) — but it wasn’t contrived or trying to hard. The contrast of the baroque counterbalanced the minimalism, street style, and luxury fabrics that were cut into classic American utilitarian shapes.

I took a video of the finale for you:)

PC Backstage at The Blonds Fall 2012 Show + Hair & Makeup How-To

Looking back at New York Fashion Week (which ended last month), I need to take a moment to share how exceptional it was concluding the festivities by going backstage to The Blonds Fall 2012 show. The Blonds has been a show that I have sadly missed in preview years due to conflict issues or logistics but never again! It was such a scene and the energy was electrifying. Backstage to the audience outfits to the actual show was beyond an experience!

I was going to make the backstage and show 1 post, but there’s too much amazingness to cover so I’m putting it in two separate ones.

A GLIMPSE BACKSTAGE:

THE HAIR –ahem blond ponytail wigs coming out of helmets!!

The Blonds hair was done by lead stylist, Laurent Philippon for Bumble and Bumble

Inspiration: Biker chicks and Johnny Depp in Cry Baby

Styling Methods: For guys: Wet hair with Thickening Hairspray and blowdry. Warm up Sumowax and apply all over the head. Style as needed to create a swoosh in front.

For girls: Create a wig wrap by spraying hair down with Prep then wrapping hair in sections around the head using Bb.Gel. Pin hair so it lays flat around the crown. Put on a wig cap and put on the helmet. Did I mention the wig was steamed to keep hair perfect?

Bumble and Bumble products used: Thickening Hairspray, Sumowax, Prep, Bb.Gel

{Phillipe Blond, founder and head designer for The Blonds backstage getting her hair done by Laurent Philippon}

{Backstage with it model Sebastien Suave — he showed me his Nintendo belt buckle. Jealous?}

THE NAILS! The team spent 130 hours on them!!!

The Blonds hair was done by lead stylist, Kristina Estabrooks for CND.  She and her team spent 130 hours hand detailing biker babe manicures. No nail set was alike – crystals, glitter, leather, Phillipe Blond faces, crushed glass shards and acid washed denim designs were just a few of the styles to grace the runway. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

THE MAKEUP! Look at this incredible green cat eye!

I’ll just let you read off the MAC Cosmetics face chart to see the products used:

Backstage at Naeem Khan Fall/Winter RTW Collection

Backstage with Naeem Khan

If you haven’t checked out the pictures from the Naeem Khan Fall/Winter RTW Collection, you should! Inspired by Italian actress Monica Vitti, the designer wanted to do a collection that referenced Italy in the 1960s and capture the beauty of the era. Draped in floor-length dresses, with exotic prints and sparkles; the designs are based on a black, white, cream, and gold color scheme. (the collection can be viewed on style.com).

Minutes before sending his collection down the runway, I was backstage with the designer while the models got primped and primed. And unlike many of the over-the-top looks we’ve seen this fashion week, this is a very achievable hair, makeup and nail look for all of you at home looking to create the look.

HAIR: Bumble and Bumble

LEAD Stylist: Laurent Philippon for Bumble and Bumble

LOOK: Effortless French Twist. Made to look as if it were done in one try.

PRODUCTS USED: Bumble & Bumble’s Thickening Hairspray, Hair Powder, Spray De Mode, and Styling Wax

HOW-TO: Part the hair down the center and spray hair with B&B’s Thickening Hairspray. Blowdry, combing down the sides and spraying B&B’s Hair Powder at the roots. Section the back of the head and blowdry it very smooth in sections. Backcomb just the roots at the crown and mist with Spray De Mode. Pull B&B’s Styling Wax through the hair then mist their Hair Powder all over. Twist up into a French twist pulling at the front hairline to create softness.

MAKEUP: NARS Cosmetics

LEAD STYLIST: James Boehmer, NARS Director of Global Artistry

LOOK: “The look is all about the precision, sharpness, and blackness of the line,” said James Boehmer, NARS Director of Global Artistry. “Everything else has that ‘barely there’ feeling. The eye line has to be really sharp and pointed up towards the temple – it’s not a cat eye, and it’s not a wide eye. It draws the eyes up.”

Backstage at Honor Fall 2011 Show (plus video of the runway show)

By Heather Wilson, Guest Blogger and Fashion Week Correspondent

“I kept looking back to a moment with my grandmother in a department store. There was a gumball machine that I wanted, but the only one left was housed in a box that was a bit damaged. The idea of something slightly distressed, but still beautiful intrigued me. The colors are warm – there’s a 70s sensibility but in an American sportswear way, ” said designer, Giovanna Randall for her inspiration for the Honor Fall 2011 collection.

James Pecis of Bumble and bumble and lead hair stylist for the show was going for a look that was “light, fluffy, with static fly away hair”. Using all Bumble and bumble products, he began by using Thickening Spray, to help give the hair body and lift for when he blew out the style. Once the hair was curled, he kept the curl soft, and moveable with the Spray de Mode Hairspray.

The other two other must have products to always have on hand for a perfectly styled look is Bumble and bumble’s Surf Spray and Texture Cream. They give your hair that “second day after washing your hair look, and holdability,” said Pecis.

The look for the show was finished off with a makeup look designed by NARS Cosmetics International Lead Makeup Artist James Boehmer. “The look is very punky, sort of like a London ‘club kid,’ but there’s a romantic

Backstage at Alexandre Herchcovitch Fall 2011 Fashion Collection (plus video of the runway show!)

Backstage at Alexandre Herchcovitch Fall 2011 Show with Rolando Beauchamp for Bumble and Bumble

Of all the hairstyles I saw this season at Fashion Week, I’m giving the most creative award to Bumble and bumble for the Alexandre Herchcovitch Fall 2011 fashion show. Covering half the face, lead stylist, Rolando Beauchamp (for Bumble and Bumble) created a 6-way, side braid. Prompted by Alexandre Herchcovitch collection, which was inspired by violent forces of nature and circled around texture and layering. I mean seriously, is it just me or is this a masterpiece?

To show you what went into creating this look, I was able to capture a model having it done (alongside makeup and nails) in 15minutes! While that may be incredibly long for a YouTube video, it’s remarkable this model was able to undergo all three so quickly. And no, having hair, makeup and nails done all at the same time is generally not practiced– this particular model ran late in between shows, so you get to witness the abridged version of what generally happens backstage.

As you can see it takes about 6 hands to create that braid (I would not try it at home without assistance), although the look is easily translatable to the everyday woman—with some modifications. Create a side part, then make
