Tavi – The Little Blogger that Could

Tavi

I am immensely impressed and taken by Tavi, the 13yr old blogger/fashionista, who founded ‘Style Rookie Blog’.  I have been following Tavi for quite some time now as she earned her way into the spotlight.  Through her impressive writing skills and content worthy posts, she’s been awarded global recognition, and a collaboration with Target for their line with Rodarte. View collection HERE.

See Tavi in action at the Rodarte for Target line HERE.

I pretty much lost it while watching this video; she’s amazing!  It’s difficult to consider this young lady a rookie, and incidentally I’m not entirely sure that title is still valid considering Tavi will has a featured column in January’s Harper’s Bazaar — So remarkable, and well deserved.  What an inspiration!

I would like to meet her parents.

An Adult in a Candy Shop

If you’re an out-of-towner, visiting New York with the kids, or just a candy connoisseur, Dylan’s Candy Bar is a destination not to be missed.

Lara in Candy Land
I may not make the most attractive gummy bear (and evidentially I should have brought a few dates) but at a recent Dylan’s Candy Bar event, I was a happy one. Surrounded by all kinds of tasty treats, there was no way I could walk out empty handed.

In fact, I picked up a Big Hunk (candy bar that is).

One of the largest candy stores in the world, this place will not only appease your sweet tooth, but also bring back the magic I feel is lost in many modern day candy stores.

This candy emporium is 15,000 square feet with over 5,000 candies, a candy café, fashion

1. Monkey Bridge Tee by Andira Rain Tees

MonkeyBridge2The MONKEY BRIDGE tee shirt by Andira Rain Tees is one of my favorite gifts for kids, not to mention it makes for a great conversation piece.  Illustrated by 11-year old Winnie McCarthy of Costa Rica, this tee is available in size 18 months to 12 youth.   Winnie’s drawing is of the special bridges which were created to give endangered monkeys a way to cross roads to prevent them from being electrocuted by power lines or getting hit by cars, and in result have saved thousands of monkeys’ lives.

Taylor Jacobson is Leaving Rachel Zoe!

rachel-zoe-project-15Remember last years finale of The Rachel Zoe Project, when Taylor Jacobson said:

“Rachel’s fearful that I’m gonna quit because she knows I’m at my wit’s end. But I’m not, I have too much work ethic, just leave her on a day like the Oscars. I would never just be like ‘screw you’ on that, I would wait till the timing was a little bit more appropriate. Which will never be, so I’ll always be stuck with Rachel because I have.Jewish guilt. Even though I’m not Jewish.” [Stylist.com]

Well that day has come.  According to sources from People.com say she was fired, however, Carrie Gordon, Rachel Zoe’s rep, would only confirm, “Taylor Jacobson is no longer with Rachel Zoe, Inc.”

In Taylor’s farewell email to her contacts she said:

“After four amazing years at Rachel Zoe Corporation, I’m saddened and exhilarated at the same time to announce my departure. After much thought and consideration, I have decided to take the challenging leap to go off and style on my own.” [Fashionista.com]

We sort of saw that one coming…

Fashion Week Makeover

Stephanie Winston Wolkoff
Stephanie Winston Wolkoff

Starting Spring 2010, NY Fashion Week is moving from Bryant Park to Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center.  This week Stephanie Winston Wolkoff was named Director of Fashion Week reporting to the President of Lincoln Center, Reynold Levy.

“We see Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week coming to Lincoln Center as an opportunity to welcome the design community. For Lincoln Center, this partnership is a natural one that we want to fully embrace, and because our campus of 16 acres has so many different places in addition to the tents for fashion shows, we want to make sure those spaces…are as welcoming and as inviting as we possibly can for the design community,” said Levy.

Considering how hard the news of Fashion Week moving out of Bryant Park was for many of us, Lincoln Center has some pretty high heels to fill. Fortunately for Levy, having the former director of special events for Vogue [Winston Wolkoff] on your team is a step in the right direction.

I look forward to what they have to unveil.

J.Crew: I Do

J.Crew Oct Catalog Cover

Having a merchandising background, I can honestly say when I saw October’s edition of J. Crew’s catalog, I was blown away.  Aside from the gorgeous clothing assortment (which I want in my wardrobe), the layouts, colors and alliances in this book are done so superbly well.

Legendary Fashion Photographer Irving Penn Dies at 92

Irving Penn's Woman With Roses
Irving Penn's Woman With Roses

Celebrated photographer Irving Penn died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan at the age of 92.   Considered one of the most influential fashion photographers of the 20th century, Penn’s global notoriety began in 1943 when he started working at Vogue.

“In my career, I have met no one else who worked with the level of imaginative intensity and economy of Irving Penn,” said Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. “His photographs were as exquisite and electrifying in the last year of his life as they were in 1943, when he started contributing to Vogue. To have been a colleague and friend of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century is a privilege greater than I could have ever imagined.”

Growing up, both Richard Avedon and Irving Penn captured everything I loved about fashion and brought such beauty and elegance to every shot they released.   When I read the headlines of Penn’s passing this morning, I could not help but feel very sentimental.  His photographs have deeply moved me and I appreciate them so much.  Rest in peace Irving Penn.

Sham-gri La! Leila Shams Spring 2010 Collection

Last week, I had the pleasure of celebrating the launch of Leila Sham’s Spring 2010 Collection at her beautiful, drool-worthy apartment in Williamsburg.  If I wasn’t so in love with the collection and consumed by my excitement of having the opportunity to own Style No. 20 Bicolor Sequin Dress (Color: Purple to Gold), I would say she missed her calling as an interior designer.  Except having known Leila and how creative she is, it’s safe to say she has a lot of callings.

Leila No. 20

This dress is so amazing! You can actually brush the sequence down to reveal the purple side or up to see gold, creating whatever purple/gold combination desired!
