Our favorite Paris Fashion Week Looks by Guido for Redken

When it comes to backstage hair looks, Guido is the king! He’s one of the most sought after hair stylists and one many of us look to for upcoming hair trends and looks. During Paris Fashion Week he created a variety of looks using Redken ranging from everyday looks to once in a blue moon. Here’s a quick recap of some of our favorites!

celine hair by guido for redken paris fashion week

“It’s a bit boyish and inspired by Sade, who was an English singer in the 80s, but it’s got some height in the font and it’s kind of squared off, meaning it’s not a pulled back, round ponytail. I started by blow drying the hair very smooth using Redken’s guts 10and shape factor 22, which I applied at the forehead and just raked through with my fingers because it’s got that great hold and adds a little bit of lift. Then, I pulled it back into a ponytail in the middle of the head and used Redken’s braid aid 03 to create the very clean braid and really hold it in place. Overall, the look feels quite tomboyish, but still super polished and modern, which is very Celine.” – Guido

  1. Start by spraying Redken pillow proof blow dry express primer all over damp hair and comb through.
  2. Apply Redken guts 10 volumizing spray-foam to damp hair from roots to ends.
  3. Using fingers, apply a nickel-size amount of Redken shape factor 22 sculpting cream-paste just to the crown of the forehead, raking back into the hair.
  4. Use a flat brush to blow dry the hair straight, lifting the roots at the crown for added for height.
  5. Create a short side part with a comb, and then emulsify a dime-size amount of Redken shape factor 22 sculpting cream-paste in palms and work into the front of the hair to define the part.
  6. Pull hair back into a clean ponytail, securing in the middle of the head with an elastic.
  7. Work a nickel-size amount of Redken braid aid 08 defining braid lotion into the length of the ponytail, and then braid hair to the ends, securing with a small elastic.
  8. Finish with a thorough spray of Redken triple take 32 extreme high-hold hairspray all over for lasting hold.

valentino how to hair backstage with guido and redken

“The look at Valentino this season is very cross-cultural. The clothes have some tribal inspiration, so the hair has that feeling as well, but in a way that’s still very Valentino with the softness around the face and ears. It’s a bit influenced by the 60’s and 70’s when girls used to travel and they would bring back inspiration from other places and cultures, which is kind of an eclectic way of styling yourself. The hair almost has a Grecian feel to it as well.  Redken’s braid aid 03 is my main product, which I used to create the cornrow twists, and then I used Redken’s triple take 32 hairspray to finish the style and hold everything in place. The silhouette elongates the neck, which is a bit Egyptian and very elegant and attractive.” – Guido

REDKEN Expands Diamond Oil Haircare Line

10848642-1377775554-907275

After the much success of the Redken Diamond Oil (have you tried it? We’re obsessed!), they expanded the line late last year to now include a Diamond Oil Shampoo, Conditioner and Mask!

If the packaging isn’t enough to attract you to these sparkling beauties, the results to your hair will!  The shampoo and conditioner look like they are made with tiny pieces of shimmering diamonds submersed in the formula.  And ok, while it might not be real diamonds, it could just be the next best thing!  The Diamond Oil Haircare line contains a blend of natural apricot, camelina and coriander oils which penetrate to the core and from the inside out to not only strengthens your hair (3X stronger), it also adds shine (by 2X)!

Throughout the bitter winter months my hair usually takes quite a beating (static, dry, dull, ugh), but with three weeks of Redken’s Sparkling Oil Complex nourishing it those days seem far behind me.  The IPN technology (included in the shampoo, conditioner, and mask) work together in the wet and dry phases to repair hair. Here’s the breakdown of how it works:

  • KeralinkTM – a specialized protein co-polymer that acts in the wet phase by binding moisture to hair while strengthening deep within the hair fiber.
  • Amino Acids and Protein – act together in the dry phase creating an ionic bond with hair’s keratin to rebuild surface protection and help enhance hair’s texture and shine.

I wash my hair 2-3 times a week and in the in-between phases used the Shatterproof Shine Intense on the ends of my hair to keep them nourished.  I also recently dyed the tips of my hair so the contrast from before and after has been dramatic.  Where my hair felt stiff and damaged before it now feels soft and manageable.  Just add 2-3 drops in the palm of your had, rub together to warm and distribute to the tips of your hair (or where ever the driest area is for you).  Added bonus: It smells great too.

Redken Unveils New Styling Collection

Redken

Combining the power of science with the desire for beauty, Redken will unveil a new line of styling products in April 2015. The collection, which consists of Braid Aid 03, Stay High 18, Short Sculpt 19, and Metal Fix 08, is inspired by Guido Palau’s iconic runway hairstyles.

Meet Guido

Guido

Redken’s creative consultant and global styling director is responsible for creating iconic runway hairstyles for Alexander Wang, McQueen, and Marc Jacobs. When creating the new Redken products, he had a singular mission: to streamline the styling process, making it faster and easier to translate to “real girl street styles”.

Braid Aid 03 is a styling balm made specifically for braiding and twisting your hair (think Lauren Conrad). Applied to damp hair, the solution makes it easier to weave hair back and forth without getting strands tangled together.

2*

Stay High 18 is a volumizing gel-mousse for women with fine hair and was inspired by toothpaste that goes from gel to foam. The root lifting technology turns from strong-hold gel into a mousse, providing both hold and lift without buildup.

4*

Short Sculpt 19 is a texturizing gel for for pixies and bobs, making it the perfect prep tool for this season’s hottest hair trend: the lob.

Finally, the most unique and fun product, Metal Fix 08 is a metallic liquid pomade that comes in silver and gold to create the illusion of highlights. Even on the dreariest of days, your strands will shine like a beach bombshell.

We can hardly wait until April….

In other news, Redken just announced their newest brand muse: top model, street style star and trendsetter Soo Joo Park! In 2015, Soo Joo will take her hair to new lengths with an exciting innovation from the Extreme haircare line. Stay tuned!

Smooth and Polished: Redken Introduces New Smooth Lock Technology

There are few things more dreadful than waking up to a forecast of excessive heat and humidity and if you have hair like mine then hot summer days can be your worst nightmare. Recently, I joined renowned salon owner, stylist and brand ambassador Rodney Cutler as he presented Redken’s new product line and service (and solution to summertime hair woes): enter Redken’s new Smooth Lock technology.

Many hair products out there are directed towards one hair type or another, but Redken’s new line was created to cater to hair types across

Redken introduces Chromatics and I get an Ombre!

How great is this color? Redken recently introduced a breakthrough for hair color with the launch of their new Chromatics service.

Generally, I find the words breakthrough to be overused in this industry (isn’t every brand claiming that when they launch something new?). However, this is the first color process I’ve experienced that uses oil! To be more exact it uses, ODS² (Oil Delivery System) + Protein Extract Technology, which envelopes hair in a layer of protective oil, while long-lasting color dyes and protein extracts are propelled deep into every strand. The result is hair that looks and feels stronger, with brilliant color and zero ammonia!

“So many of my clients stick to a strict 4-6 week schedule for coloring their hair.  With NEW Chromatics, they leave the salon with incredible color and fortified hair,” says David Stanko, Color Consultant for Redken.  “Chromatics is great for providing 100% gray coverage, conditioned high-shine color and rich even results from root to tip.”

While, I’m not one to color my hair, I curiosity got the better of me and I’ve been kicking around the idea of an ombre so I went for it. I arrived at Cutler’s uptown salon all nervous as though I was walking into surgery. My virgin hair about to be processed! I was so timid I asked for a very light ombre that I would be able to outgrow within a few haircuts.

While at the salon, I was scoping all my fellow bloggers hair (all of which we’re going for the full Chromatics experience). I saw a range of beautifully colored blondes through brunettes, all gushing over the treatment.

{Dream hair team at Cutler Salon}

It only took 3 hours and 4 men, but I got my color! And for anyone who’s hesitant to dye their whole hair or too lazy to deal with the maintenance, I highly recommend an ombre. I have no idea why I was so nervous now. I assume it’s like a tattoo (I don’t have one of those either), but once you start you want more. And the best part about an ombre is it’s expected to not be uniform so I don’t have to worry about it getting evened out. And even when my hair is up or curly, I love the hint of color that pops out.

{Messy, morning hair is so muh more fun with a little highlight!}

PC at Rebecca Taylor Spring 2012 RTW Collection

Rebecca Taylor was true to her reputation for S/S 2012 offering feminine, wearable dresses and separates that move with the body. Unfortunately, iPhone’s video capabilities and Fashion Week lighting are not a winning combination, but here’s a quick peak at the finale of the show:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKHLSt1XrJ8

“Inspiration is so ephemeral,” said Taylor, stating that she picked up her inspiration from a hodgepodge of places. Aiming to set a contemporary, fresh, and ethereal tone to the designs, the collection emphasizes cut and color with unexpected cut-outs in sibhouettes. This was reflected in her collection which mixed flowy materials and sparkly embellished tops, with some structured dark colored dresses. Also white, neon yellow, floral prints as well as a few dark black and blue pieces were thrown in, creating this disjointed palette. Although the collection lacks the drama and excitement of many runway shows, it is very wearable and I am sure the retails buyers were marking their favorites to display this Spring.

My two favorite looks from the collection included

Taking Time with Rodney Cutler for Redken’s NEW Nature’s Rescue Collection

Redken Nature's Rescue Collection

There’s a big shift in the industry right now with brands creating more natural formulations due to the increasing concerns over parabens, sulfates and silicone. This month, Redken joins the ranks by launching Nature’s Rescue, a new (paraben-free, sulfate-free and silicone-free) haircare collection merging together technological expertise with plant and marine extracts to help remove impurities and buildup while helping to nourish hair.

Last month, I took time with Rodney Cutler, Redken Brand Ambassador and owner of Cutler/Redken Salons for a special preview of the collection. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Rodney Cutler on a few occasions and seeing him in action and It’s always very humbling to be in his presence. Cutler addressed the growing demand in the marketplace for natural products but at the end of the day “the products have to work, otherwise, what’s the point?” So while this line will fill that naturals void in the Redken collection, it’s the really the unique blend of this Sea Algae HydraComplex that makes it so unique. It consists of Sea Algae, for it’s protective properties, Soy Protein for it’s replenishing ones and Aloe Vera for moisture.

The Nature’s Rescue collection consists of four products:

  • Refreshing Detox Shampoo: $16 (6.8oz) – washes away daily stress by helping to eliminate impurities, pollution and buildup.
  • Refining Sea Polish: $19 (3.4oz) – gentle exfoliant enriched with pumice removes impurities and refines hair’s surface leaving it smooth and shiny.
  • Cooling Deep Conditioner: $17 (4.2oz) – Ultra moisturizing conditioner helps rebalance hair while cooling and soothing the scalp.
  • Radiant Sea Spray: $17 (3.4oz) – lightweight and multifunctional spray that adds texture.

The other great attribute to the collection is Nature’s Rescue is formulated for all hair types, safe for color-treated hair, and can be used daily, weekly or on alternate days from your regular haircare regimen. When I asked the must have from the collection, without hesitation Cutler chose the Refining Seas Polish claiming, “there’s nothing else like it on the market! Wait until you try it, and just feel your hair after you rinse it out—it will be so soft”.  Needless to say I was intrigued.

I then went on to the Cutler Salon in the Gansevoort Park Hotel to experience the line. My first observation was that the shampoo felt and looked similarly to aloe. It had a slight lather and was easily worked into and absorbed by my hair. Next the Refinish Sea Polish –it literally felt like a gritty exfoliant that felt like sand paper mixed into a moisturizer.  The key to this product is to put a small amount in between your hands, start at the shaft and shimmy your hands down to the root going with the grain of the hair. Do it in sections to really get every part. My stylist then

Halloween is a fun time of year when you can really go outside your comfort zone and play dress up without any concern about looking too ridiculous or over-dressed.  This year, I decided to be Kim Kardashian.  It was very entertaining creating this costume considering it was my first ‘stuff my bra/butt experience.’  It also gave me an opportunity to test a lot of products.

Here’s a quick excerpt of the my Kim Kardashian look (more detailed review to come):

HAIR:

Redken Go Clean Shampoo and Finish Up Conditioner – Love it! This is part of Redken’s men’s line but it works really well on my hair.  Great lather, my hair comes out shiny and well, clean.  But yes, you’ll smell like a dude.  When men ask me for a list of products I recommend for them, this is always on the list (unless they have color treated hair).

Ken Paves Professional Styling Iron – Part of Ken Paves’ Travel line, is this lightweight straightener, which is fast becoming my everyday straightener – it’s that good.  Originally I was apprehensive about this product since I didn’t think ‘one heat setting fits all’ is viable for flat irons; however it gets very hot (up to 410 degrees F), which is what is really necessary for my curly hair.  Warning, if you generally use your flat iron on a low heat setting, this may not be the product for you.  Unless of course the heat settings automatically adjusts based on hair need, but either way there is no dial to manually control it.  I will investigate this further and report back.

Living Proof Straight Making No Frizz Styling Treatment – a great protective cream for when you’re using a flat iron or blow-drying your hair.  Helps fight frizz and only requires a small dollop to service your entire scalp.  It’s no wonder this line has been winning so many prestigious beauty awards!

Cutler Specialist Fly-Away Control Stick This is my go to product for fly aways. Shaped like a deodorant stick, I just roll them over problematic areas and I’m all set for the entire evening.

John Frieda Luxurious Volume All-Out Hold Hairspray – This product fell a little flat.  It has great hold, but didn’t maintain the volume I was hoping for.

LIPS:

L’Oreal Infallible Plumping Lip Gloss in Plumped Pink and Plumped Red – It tingles a bit, and I definitely felt a little plumping action taking place, but having pretty full lips already, it wasn’t
