Famed make-up artist Alice Lane for Maybelline lead the makeup team for the Mara Hoffman Fall/Winter 2014 show creating a look that captured the spirit of a nomadic desert nymph. The collection was comprised of rich, printed fabrics saturated with striking colors and even though the look called for heavy liner, these runway Romany were easy on the eyes.
Backstage at Tibi the beauty look mimicked the country girl meets urbanite inspired collection. Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders did a center part straight hair look with an inch section inverted braid that goes through the center to the crown (below is the how to get the look).
Backstage at Creatures of the Wind the models had this very cool but unexpected mishmosh of beauty. An intricate braid swept across the face against this pretty, luminous skin and honey dewy lip against a lightening flash of metallic blue popping in across the lower lash. Even mixed with a strong brow the look manages to be very dreamy and romantic.
To be the first show of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, that has a call time of 7 am no less, is quite the fete. However, Nicholas K is always up for the challenge. Literally every season during the fall shows I look forward to the Go Red for Women Heart’s Red Truth fashion show. Considering heart disease is the #1 killer of women it’s so great that so many celebrities, designers and women come together to team up with Go Red For Women and raise awareness for this great cause.
RAOUL has a lot in the works for next fall! Shoes, handbags and a dapper collection of womenswear. Lots of black/white duos, and vintage themed items, mixed in with some bright jewel-toned evening wear. The more 70’s-esque collection is what had me swooning!
It’s here, New York Fashion Week ! This isn’t my first rodeo so with over 20 shows covering backstage and the runway, I have my survival kit on lockdown (although I add to it every season with new and better discoveries). The tease of New York Fashion Week is the fact that you are feasting your eyes on styles that are approximately six months from rubbing elbows with your wardrobe. You actually have to experience the opposite season, in the meantime. {watching spring shows during fall and vice versa, cruel if you ask me} True, we still have to wait for the collections to hit stores but the inspiration? It’s ours for the taking. For a culture that is used to instant gratification, here are three Spring ’14 trends you can work right now:
Metalica
With the holidays approaching like a freight train, high shine will be on everyone’s mind. Look for key pieces that you can carry over to spring like pants that put on the glitz and a jacket that will give decorative tinsel a run for it’s money.
I was sifting through my New York Fashion Week pictures and was so inspired by the entire ambiance of Trina Turks Spring 2014 collection. While it’s gray and rainy in NYC, this collection has me dreaming of California road trips; warm weather, sparking beaches and pink sunsets. Inspired by a scenic route up the Pacific Coast Highway, the prints give the clothes vintage vibe and that crop top we’ve been seeing all season definitely has it’s place in this collection. Just hand me a pair of sunnies and sign me up!
For the hair, Martin Christopher Harper for Cutler Salon went with a textured, middle part beach wave using Redken Full Frame 07 Volumizing Mousse and Redken Rootful 06 Root Lifting Spray. Then followed with a curling iron and to create a soft wave before finishing off with Redken Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray. I was lucky enough to see a couple of shows at New York Fashion Week, and it was an amazing experience. However, while I loved seeing the polished presentation of the runway, it wasn’t until I got to witness the carefully controlled chaos backstage that I truly appreciated the work, artistry, and incredible teamwork that goes into making the show look so effortless. I went backstage with Red Door Spa to watch them create hair, makeup, and nails for Brandon Sun’s Spring 2014 collection.
Sun’s collection is casual and sophisticated, with an irreverent energy. To play off this upscale downtown vibe, makeup artist Cesar Olivas designed a beautifully polished look that was classy, but with an edge.
Keeping the face natural and fresh, the models’ matte complexions were the perfect base for a contoured, smoked-out eye using Elizabeth Arden’s Beautiful Color Smokey Eyes Pencil and Color Intrigued Eyeliner. Lashes were left free of mascara to keep the overall impression soft.
Picking up the hints of orange in the collection, lips were stained a soft red that brought a playfulness to the look.
National creative director and master hair stylist Zahir Ziani kept hair simply styled and natural, “like she did it herself.” Sweeping hair off the face and into a low side bun, with a few stray strands falling naturally, this tousled style counterbalanced the chic, put-together collection.
Inspired by the grunge-rock elements of Sun’s designs, national training director of nails Adeline Sarino created a cool ombre manicure using shades of light and dove gray. Nail technicians painted stripes of lacquer onto cotton balls, then swiped them over models’ nails to produce a one-of-a-kind look that I’m dying to practice on myself.
Watching the models be transformed from women in street clothes and bare faces to elegant head to toe glam-punks was completely mind blowing. What do you think of the finished look?
