Lucky Magazine Hosts FABB Conference

Event: Lucky Magazine Inaugural Fashion and Beauty Blogger (FABB) Conference
When: February 8th
Venue: Apella, NYC

Fellow Blogger Kimmy Scotti and Lara Eurdolian (me!) at FABB

Lucky Magazine did an extraordinary thing for us bloggers, when hosting their inaugural Fashion and Beauty Blogger (FABB) Conference last week.  To have such an amazing publication show their support to the Blogger community and take the time to organize such an incredibly group of guest speakers and panelists shows a high level of acceptance of us in this industry. I mean HELLO! They got us Jenna Lyons, Tory Burch, Joan Rivers, Sohie Buhai, Lisa Mayock, Kerry Diamond, Erika Bearman (aka @OscarPRGirl) and so many more incredible speakers and notable bloggers. And proved that there’s no reason for all of this hype that magazines and bloggers are in competition, but rather can work to support each other to mutually grow and benefit. Of course on some level we are, but not any more so then we are with our fellow bloggers, and with this new social space it’s a great time for us to come together.

Brandon Holley and Tory Burch
Jenna Lyons (my inspiration), Lara Eurdolian

I was curious to meet Brandon Holley, the new editor in chief of Lucky magazine, who was hosting the event. She recently replaced former Lucky editor, Kim France who founded the publication. Clearly, she has big shoes to fill, however Holley came from Shine, Yahoo’s site for women and obviously has a strong digital and web background. And is putting that experience to good use; it was both innovative and monumental for Lucky to start FABB. Am I expressing the magnitude of this! Most of us would have been content with a digital director hosting the event and her making an appearance. The fact that Holley took the time out of her busy schedule to spend an entire day with us, and advocate for our growth is epic.

Okay, enough gushing, you get the point. The room was filled with bloggers at all levels; from ones who haven’t started their blogs to those who have created a business out of them. I walked out of the conference inspired and hopeful. My notebook was filled with advice including

AHALife and Ivanka Trump Do Good

Event: Ivanka Trump and Ahalife Jewelry Event
Date: February 7, 2011
Location: Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry Boutique, Madison Avenue, NYC

Wendi Murdoch, Shauna Mei and Ivanka Trump
Ivanka Trump Girl Up Bracelet

I kicked off the week with AHAlife and Ivanka Trump at a private event hosted at her jewelry store on Madison Avenue. If you’re not familiar with AHAlife.com, you should be or at least sign up for their newsletter. They are a website that sells unique finds from all over the world curated by a series of tastemakers (all of which you can “meet” on their site). One of which, Wendi Murdoch, featured Ivanka Trump’s Girl Up Bracelet, which went on sale on AHAlife the very next day.  Priced at $40, 100% of the proceeds from the sale benefits the United Nations Girl Up campaign, an organization that works to improve the lives of girls globally.

“We help provide basic needs such as access to school supplies, clean water, life-saving health services, safety from violence and more for these young girls,” says Trump. The bracelet features a sterling silver chain and a coral silk cord joined by two sterling silver charms—the Girl Up bird and the Ivanka Trump logo.

Considering you’ll likely never see anything at the Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry Boutique priced at $40 (or on AHALife.com), let alone with the proceeds going to such a worthy cause, I would recommend jumping on this opportunity. Oh look at that, I just

This is Your Brain on Ping Pong

New Years Eve Affaire with Fig. 19

Affaire Restaurant and Lounge

I have a lot to catch up on –especially since I’m only now reflecting on my New Years. Despite popular belief, NYE is generally a HUGE letdown in NYC –it’s cold, you can’t catch a cab, you need to pick your party wisely since bar hoping is next to impossible, so are the bar crowds, the cover charges… and at the end of the day all you’re looking for is that great crowd and perfect midnight kiss.  Usually the only place that can be found is in the movies. Then again, lately it feels like my life is something straight out of one so it should have been no surprise that I had an amazing night. I got to do the girly get ready thing, and go to one of my bestfriend’s apartments (complete with multiple clothing and shoe options), crack a bottle of wine and glam up for our evening out.

I then begin my night at a private party a friend of mine was hosting at the soon-to-be-open-to-the-public bar, Fig. 19.  Opened by the same owners of Home Sweet Home, the new speakeasy is located directly above it at 131 Chrystie Street. When you arrive, you walk up the stairs, go through the NP Art Gallery, and Fig.19 unfolds into a charming bar with exposed brick. Rob Pope from Spoon and Clarke Baechle from The Faint DJ-ed the event and despite being warned not to be the jerk that shows up at 11:30pm trying to get in – I of course was! Fortunately, the bouncer had a sweet spot for me, and before the clock struck 12, I was celebrating with new and old friends, champagne in hand.

After the countdown (miracles of miracle), I found a cab and headed over to the E. Village for the opening party of Affaire. Originally, China 1, owner Andrew Krauss converted the large dual level space into Affaire, an upbeat French restaurant and lounge. Complete with

Megan Fox at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards

Megan Fox at the Golden Globe Awards

Megan Fox rocked the red carpet at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards dressed in Armani Prive with a classic Hollywood do that perfectly sculpted her face and complemented her one-strap gown.

Inspired to create a classic look for Megan Fox with a glamorous vibe, hairstylist Andy Lecompte achieved the look using Phyto Haircare to create a beautiful side-swept wave.

HERE’S HOW:

Lecompte started by applying Phyto Professional Intense Volume Mousse prior to blow-drying. He then set her hair using a 3/4-inch barrel curling iron and then pin curls. Once he released the pin curls, Lecompte brushed out her hair and gave it a deep side part.

You’re Invited 1/19: Susan Sarandon, SPiN & American Museum of Natural History

This time last year I was playing ping pong @ The Four Seasons in Kona, Hawaii. Sigh

For any regular Pretty Connected readers you’re probably aware of my love for ping pong and specifically the table tennis social club, SPiN New York (and their handsome owners). In fact I’m the first member of their club (I have a card that says ‘001’ and everything!). And as their biggest fan I’m passing on an invitation for an event they are hosting tomorrow night!

When: Wednesday, January 19th, 6:30PM
Where: Museum of Natural History Milstein Hall of Ocean Life on the first floor. (Enter the Museum at 77th Street.)

As part of their crusade for endless ridiculousness (all in the name of ping pong) and places they aspire to play the sport consider yourself invited to come play with them at the American Museum of Natural History under the 94-foot Giant Blue Whale. It will be an evening focused on the science and skill of ping pong and to discover how the brain benefits from our favorite game.

Improve your skills with instruction by our SPiN Pros during free, open play and partake in a conversation with aficionados, including Susan Sarandon,  puzzle master Will Shortz, Wendy A. Suzuki, Professor of Neural Science and Psychology at NYU, and a few ranking champions in a short discussion moderated by Melanie Stiassny, Curator of Ichthyology at the American Museum of Natural History.

This event is free and open to the public with a cash bar. Click HERE to learn more.

66 Degrees North Winter 2011 Men’s and Women’s Collection

66 North Winter 2011 Collection Presentation

66 Degrees North, the brand that has been keeping Icelanders warm since 1926 unveiled it’s Winter 2011 Collection last week at the Scandinavia House Volvo Hall.

Creating an Icelandic experience –between the setting of the venue and serving REYKA Vodka with traditional Icelandic hors d’oeuvres (even the room was on the chillier side), their models walked the runway wearing select pieces from the 66 Degrees North Winter 2011 Men’s and Women’s collection.

True to their roots, 66 Degrees North is a response to Iceland’s challenging weather conditions (they can experience four seasons in one day!). The winter collection features a range of warm insulated and stylish protective clothing, comprised of a variety of down and nylon jackets, warm wool sweaters and accessories with accents of faux fur linings.

“We don’t let bad weather stop us from experiencing life!” – Halldor G Eyjolfsson, CEO 66 North.

I wish I could say the same! These recent storms in NY make me want to curl up by the imaginary fireplace (I wish I had) and never leave home. Although many pieces from this collection would have me singing another tune.

66 Degrees North Vik Women's Hooded Sweater

After flipping through the Look Book, I’m adding Vik Women’s Hooded Sweater ($168) in Red to my wish list! I love it!

Meditation with Abdi Assadi

Tonight, I attended a group meditation session lead by renowned spiritual counselor and Shadows On The Path author, Adbi Assadi. I’ve written about Abdi in the past, he was one of the panelists at Norma Kamali’s “Conversations: A Dialogue on Wellness Solutions” seminar I attended at the Museum of Modern Art.

The session began with us using sage to smudge away negative energy on another member of the class; followed by Adbi leading us in a through a meditation sequence. I had a very rough week –I was out of commission due to an injury (hence I’ve a little quiet recently) and it felt really good to finally get out today and be apart of something so relaxing and mind opening.

To be apart of his next complimentary meditation session in New York City, sign up for his mailing list on http://abdiassadi.com/
