Win the KOxHedwig Nail Polish Collection As Seen on Neil Patrick Harris {Giveaway}

Hedwig nail polish

My goodness, I feel like this has been a non-stop exciting week of announcements! As some of you know I recently became a spokesperson and partner in Knock Out nail polish. They launched over 5 years ago and were the first brand to do matte nail polish and having I was obsessed with them from the start. About 3 years ago I met one of the founders, and we have since became good friends. So getting to be apart of the brand this year was a big honor for me. As is the big announcement that Knock Out is the exclusive nail polish brand for Hedwig on Broadway starring Neil Patrick Harris and created a custom KOxHedwig collection for the show.

The collection consists of four shades, Bombshell (matte yellow), Hedwig (red glitter), Sugar (white glitter sparkle), and Midnight (navy glitter). Since up until now Knock Out has only done matte, creating our first glitter collection is very exciting. Mike Potter, the founder and creator of Knock Out, is the infamous makeup artist behind the makeup and wigs in both Hedwig the movie and on Broadway so it’s been exciting watching him work with Neil Patrick Harris and all of his support with the collection. He wore our Midnight shade at the Tony awards — and if you heard his acceptance speech, Mike got an amazing shout out. (You can see the feature on his manicure on allure.com).

Karen O Oscars Knock Out manicure

Mike is also Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs makeup artist and she debuted our Sugar shade at the Oscars this year where she was both nominated and performed during the awards. Karen O has been the face of the line since it launched in 2009.

The KOxHedwig collection is $20 and available at hedwigbroadwaygoods.com

L.A. COLORS ‘Brush with Fame’ Challenge #5: Sizzlin Style – Get the Look: David Bowie, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne

Brush With Fame contest

So here we have it, the final challenge in the In Touch Weekly, Life & Style Weekly, L.A. Colors ‘Brush with Fame’ competition! For our final crusade we are tasked with picking 3 of our favorite celebrity style icons and need to showcase how you can get the look from head to toe using L.A. Colors. Now I love Nicole Richie, Blake Lively and Rachel Bilson’s style but when it comes to their makeup they have similar nude makeup looks (and I only had room for 1 celebrity with a nude look). Plus with a brand like L.A. Colors, that has so much pigment and color to play with, I wanted to push myself to do three very different looks that featured celebs with amazing beauty and fashion style. So for the sake of diversity and my love for playing with different colors and looks (and celebrities that I consider artists when it comes to dressing), I went with Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne and my ultimate #1 in live, David Bowie. This challenge was a whole lot of fun, so enjoy!

{David Bowie Inspiration Labyrinth meets Ziggy Stardusts}

David Bowie style

David Bowie is just the ultimate. As my girl Susan Sarandon recently described him when revealing she had a “wild love affair” with him decades ago, “He’s worth idolizing. He’s extraordinary… just a really interesting person, and so bright. He’s a talent, and a painter, and… he’s great.” That’s like everything I’ve always assumed about him and more. He’s original, and a true artist head to toe. And for this look I got to use eyeshadow for blush, lipstick for eyeshadow — And took his styling from Labyrinth as inspiration for the outfit and Ziggy Stardust for the makeup and nails (for which used L.A. Colors Color Craze Nail Polish in Glam). In this look I’m wearing D&G sequins leggings, Modern Vice red shoes, Aryn K ruffle top, with a mens YSL velvet jacket.

L.A. COLORS ‘Brush with Fame’ Challenge #4: Summer Cover Up

LA COLORS Foundation

With only two challenges left this weeks Life & StyleIn Touch and L.A. COLORS “Brush with Fame” challenge is “Summer Cover Up.” That’s right, we’re talking all things foundation, concealer and powders!

When looking for the perfect foundation, it’s important to know what you want and that you get to know your skin – are you oily, normal or dry? Are you fair, medium or dark? Do you have pink or yellow undertones? What level of coverage are you looking for? (And what are you trying to cover — enlarged mores, wrinkles, acne scars, beauty marks, redness, dark circles, or smooth out your entire face). And lastly do you have a preference in the finish? (dewy, matte or regular?).

Lately, I feel like I have one exciting announcement after another — with much more to come! I have so much to share with you guys but for right now I’m so delighted that Beauty Stat asked to feature me on their site and talk about my “Tomgirl’s Guide to Beauty”. As some of you know I started the style blog, In His Clothes, where one item of each look is either mens or menswear inspired, while the rest of the outfit is free game.

Tomgirl is a term I coined this year when I started the blog, which unlike tomboy style (which is all about dressing like the boys), Tomgirl style is borrowing from them but keeping a feminine edge. I like to think of it as boy meets girl – converse with dresses, motorcycle jackets over flowy skirts, heels with boyfriend jeans… You get my drift. And since beauty plays a big role in everything I do from a bold lip to a matte nail, read my tomgirl’s guide on BeautyStat.com to learn my must-have products! (The image above is just the intro, you have to click HERE to see my picks!)

L.A. COLORS “Brush with Fame” Challenge #3: Lip Service

Happy National lipstick day! We’re now on round 3 of the Life & StyleIn Touch and L.A. COLORS “Brush with Fame” competition. This week’s challenge is appropriately “Lip Service” and I’m tasked to kiss and tell my favorite lip trends. As some who likes to go bold or go home — literally, there’s a 99% chance you may never see me in a nude lip (If I could pull it off like Blake Lively or Kim K. then that would be a different story) — for starters a red lip makes your teeth look whiter, instantly makes me look 500% more awake and it completes an outfit like no other! So my #1 goes to the tried and true red lip. My red lip icons are Gwen Stefani and Dita Von Teese and I do need to give Taylor Swift some props as well! Whether you’re going for old hollywood, new hollywood, classic or edgy, there’s a red for everyone! And what can’t it be worn with? Go casual or glam a red lip ties and outfit together and shows us who’s boss! (It comes with confidence in every application — just make sure you’re wearing the red and the red isn’t wearing you!) And it’s seasonless, from a black tee to cocktail dress the same red (or a variation!) can be worn from day to night. And it’s a trend that if you know how to rock, will never go out of style — just take a cue from Gwen Stefani with all the ways (and hair dos) she styles it with!gwen stefani red lip

Now if you’re one of those that can’t find the right shade the trick is practice, practice, practice (or rather, try, try, try). There are general rules like if you’re…

Fair skin – opt for pink reds to ones with blue undertones (cool reds) work for you! Coral reds as well.

Medium skintone – you’re golden in true reds as well as orangy-reds (warm reds) and fiery tones!

Darker complexions – raspberry reds to rich burgundy shades as well as cool reds.

Keep in mind there are exceptions and variations to all of these (like MAJOR ones), there’s probably a blue-red to orange-red for every person with the amount of reds on the market so sometimes your best bet is to find a celebrity that has similar coloring to you and see which shade they wear. Everything from your hair color, to your undertones as well as the finish of the lipstick (matte, shine or glossy)

Almay Smart Shade Makeup {Review}

Almay Smart Shade

Now I know what you’re thinking: How can a product that comes out white be Makeup? I thought the same thing when trying the new Almay Smart Shade skintone matching makeup. Here’s the cool part it contains Almay’s breakthrough tonemimic shade-sensing bead technology which you see inside the white formula and when you blend it on your skin it intuitively transforms your skintone to even it out and look like you’re not wearing makeup at all.

L.A. COLORS “Brush With Fame” Challenge #2: Eye Spy

Screen Shot 2014-07-25 at 1.51.18 PM

Earlier this week I announced I was one of the 5 finalists in Life & Style, In Touch and L.A. COLORS “Brush with Fame” competition. Every week I’ll be sent different challenges — the 1st was “Brush Up” where I featured my flower power nail art tutorial, and I just got my 2nd challenge: “Eye Spy!”

For this challenge I’m going to show you how I lash out.  I’m a smokey eye, black liner girl — cat eye, reverse cat-eye, thick/thin black eyeliner line — you will not see me leave the house without something black in my waterline. And love them or not, no one rocks an eye like Kim Kardashian, Kristen Stewart, RiRi and Katy Perry (lets be honest, we all love Katy Perry) — or at least on a consistent basis (we’ve seen some pretty amazing looks from countless other stars). And Dita Von Teese and Lauren Conrad are the queens of the cat eye.

While these are timeless looks the trend of right now that I have been excited about is blue liner/shadow! It’s a welcomed addition to my black liner and has been everywhere from the runway to celebrities and seen on everyone from Lupita Nyong’o, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Hudson, Eve, to January Jones — which just shows you the range of skintones it looks amazing on!

So here’s how I lash out and how you can too! For a beginner look get inspired by Jessica Biel — see how great that pop of blue makes such a pretty statement without being over the top? At a very simplistic level you could create her look with  L.A. COLORS Grafix Eyeliner in Black on the top lid and then smudge the green aqua blue eyeshadow shade with one of the blue shades from their 16 Color Eye Shadow Haute Palette to create that pretty under eye look. If you really want it to pop, use the their Jumbo Eye Pencils in shade See Shells (white) under your eyes and then put the green aqua blue shade on top.

I did a different variation inspired by her look with a bit more cobalt blue effect. Here’s how to recreate my eyes:

Step 1: Use L.A. COLORS Jumbo Eye Pencil in shade Pool Party on the bottom and top lash line.

Jennifer Walsh Launches First Collegiate Beauty Brand: Pride & Glory!

Pride & Glory Jennifer Walsh

Here at Pretty Connected, we LOVE Jennifer Walsh. She’s probably one of the most inspiring, and wonderful women I know and when it comes to the beauty industry, she’s top notch and in a league of her own — she’s beyond knowledgeable and has consulted with more beauty brands then I can count!

Well I have some exciting news! After founding The Beauty Bar in 1998 and spending 16 years on TV educating viewers, our favorite beauty veteran has a new venture. She’s launching her very own innovative skincare line, Pride & Glory. Pride & Glory is the country’s first ever collegiate beauty brand that partners with each school to give back to a local charity of that college.

Inspiration for this line came about after the tragedy of Hurricane Sandy. Though Jennifer was not physically effected by the storm, what she experienced and witnessed propelled her to get involved and she became very active in the recovery process and in organizing drives. For 6 months after the storm hit she rented a U-haul truck every week, and thanks to her supporters and social media outreach was able to fill them with donations from all over the country to help those in need.
