Kipling Turns 25 + Launches Global Art Project, “Play with Bags”

Kipling 'Play with Bags'

Global accessories brand, Kipling celebrated it’s 25th birthday at Helen Mills in NYC last week and took opportunity to launch their global art project, “Play With Bags”. Showcasing 8 artists from around the world, they handpicked former French fashion stylist Vincent Gapaillard, UK Photographer, Rankin, Belgian photographer Alex Salinas, Sarah Illenberger of Germany, Javier Mariscal of Spain, Li Wei of China, and Prince Lauder of Mexico. The artists were given the simple instruction to ‘Play with Bags’ using the Kipling “Classics Collection”, a small collection of modernized re-editions of classic Kipling styles in shades of tangerine and electric blue to create their works.

The birthday party featured all the works of the artist in a gallery set up and had a giant birthday card for guests to sign. There’s something so super 90s about Kipling, that it’s a good thing the 90s are coming back! While I’m not big on mini-backbacks (in general), I’m loving their tangerine duffle bags!

In honor of this milestone, Kipling has also launched a unique site, www.25yearskipling.com, to keep fans updated on all the exciting projects and collaborations the brands working on throughout the year.

Bloomingdale’s celebrates Hugo Boss with Artists, Jeff Koons, Mia Moretti & Caitlin Moe

Check out my Jeff Koons original!

Last night, was a big day for Hugo Boss (and me)! As some of you saw the invite (I posted earlier this week), Sunham Home Fashions was celebrating the launch of the new BOSS Home bedding collection at Bloomingdale’s. Hosted on the 7th floor, guests had the opportunity to shop the collection and enjoy a musical performances by Mia Moretti & Caitlin Moe. I’ve seen those girls do their violin/DJ set probably 15 times in the past year and it never gets old! BOSS Home will be exclusive to Bloomingdale’s for the next 3 months, so go check them out!

I stopped by with Lorna from The Fabulous Report and we met up with the super fun Fashion Indie team to check out the collection; then headed down to the 3rd floor, where Hugo Boss continued the party with the launch of the new BOSS Black women’s shop. If upstairs was all about the jams, downstairs was all about art, with a special appearance by renowned artist, Jeff Koons! Apparently Koons is a big fan of the brand and to mark the new opening, he designed a limited edition shopping bag for Hugo Boss. And guess what? Jeff Koons drew me an original drawing (in front of me) on the bag! It was kind of the best ever!

Jeff Koons drawing me a pic!

I’m freaking out that I have a Jeff Koon’s original, complete with my name on it and his autograph! This bag is totally getting framed. Side note: Samantha, Editor-In-Chic of FashionIndie had this awesome Samsung Galaxy Note phone and was able to pimp out photo with comments after she took the shot (as seen above with her fancy penmanship)! Wish my iPhone could do that.

Lands’ End Canvas Rocks Their Spring/Summer 2012 Collection With The Wandas

Lands’ End Canvas knows how to throw and party and launch a collection in style! Last week they premiered and celebrated their Spring/Summer 2012 collection with a special performance by The Wandas. Hosted at the Highline Stages, they previewed the whole collection and transformed the space into a canvas (how clever!) and allowed guests to paint on the designated wall, while The Wandas took to the stage in the background.

Patrick McMullan & David Foox Celebrate Bunnies

In celebration of the Year of the Rabbit, Patrick McMullan and David Foox debut their collection with a rocking opening reception at the Sanctuary Hotel. Much fun was to be had; so Laura, Antonio and I got a leetle silly. Which is always a good thing in this crowd. And the night only got crazier from there…

Antonio is friends with Patrick so I hopped on the bunny train and went to dinner with iconic photographer –which was awesome since I got his Kiss Kiss book in the gift bag and wanted an intimate moment to ask him to sign it! Strangely the evening ended with us in front of the Transformers 3 premiere watching Patrick shoot the red carpet. It’s always the unsuspecting NYC nights, where I think I’m going to an art show for an hour and will be in bed by 10pm that turn into the late night most fun evenings.

Andy Warhol Hanging out in Union Square

Have you seen Andy Warhol in Union Square? Sporting an iconic Bloomingdale’s ‘medium brown bag’, he’s hanging out on 17th Street on the Northwest corner of Union Square (NYC).

I recently started a consulting gig in the area and spend my mornings walking by him. It’s fun seeing people see the statue for the first time and stop to admire him and take pictures. Regretfully, the chrome-plated sculpture, standing 10-foot tall, is not a permanent fixture –although I think it should be!!!! Funded by the Public Art Fund, it will be on display through October 2nd. I’m going to miss him when he’s gone.

Fun fact: Andy’s practically home! The Andy Monument stands within eye-shot of two of the buildings that formerly housed his famous Factory –33 Union Square West and 860 Broadway.

Go visit him!

Inside the Chihuly Exhibit

Looking up to a glass blown ceiling

This past weekend I was in Boston and headed to the Chihuly ‘Through the Looking Glass’ exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA). If you’re visiting the area (or are local), it’s a must see! Especially if you’re a fan of blown glass. Based in Seattle with his team of glassblowers, Dale Chihuly revolutionized the art.

The exhibit features several rooms of a variety of installations in different colors and styles. There was a glass blown ceiling in one of them which blew my mind! The way the colors reflected and the level of craftsmanship… so beautiful!

Then there we’re also these purple glass beams parked in bark, which I wanted to take home with me. And a variety of glass chandeliers that were simply stunning. Then there were a few rooms which were filled with crazy shapes and colored glass that kind of remind me to of those balloon animals clowns make at kids birthday parties. But I have to say out of all this amazingness, my favorite was this series he did based on the shapes of weaving baskets.

And you know what else I love? That the MFA lets you take pictures! Hopefully you get to make the exhibit, but if not enjoy the pictures.

James Vincent Presents The Makeup Show 2011 in NYC

If you’re in the beauty world or aspire to be a makeup artist you by now you should know about The Makeup Show. And if you don’t, visit their website right now! Now in their 6th year, The Makeup Show is a two-day exhibition that takes place in NY, LA, Chicago and Europe, and exposes guests to some of the top artists, brands, workshops, seminars and is the best go-to resource for how to get started in this industry. It’s also one of the only times top brands, including NARS Cosmetics, MAKE UP FOR EVER, YSL, Stila… will offer their products at a discount (it’s a good time to stock up).

Last night, James Vincent, the Director of Education and Artist Relations for The Makeup Show hosted a blogger preview party, and gave us bloggers some fun goodies to try. He also introduced The Makeup Show and it’s importance to makeup artists everywhere (watch the video above). The only item in the gift bag I’ve tried thus far is MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Aqua Liner, which I’m currently having a love affair with. I received a few samples from them last week and all I can say is if you’re  a liquid liner fan this is a must-try! It’s so easy to use and waterproof. This liner got me through all the beaches and pools in Acapulco. And now that I’m back in NY, and it’s raining buckets, but my eyeliner is staying put!

Following the blogger preview party, The Makeup Show hosted a makeup art exhibition, “New York Groove, A Gallery of Makeup Art”. MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Creative & Artistic Director Dany Sanz took the cake in the performance and live art she developed. Sanz created three different looks (in human marionette form); a Ballerina, a Rockette and a Chorus Line dancer. Now much more NY can you get? Check out the performance!
