Gillette Venus World Shave Headquarters Tour

gillette-venus-party

Last week, I took a 24 hour trip to Boston to go behind the scenes at the Gillette World Shave Headquarters and take a tour of the facility. This was especially exciting for me since I’m from Boston and they were the first razor I ever bought. I’m also a loyalist today, especially with the Venus Snap which I’ve probably featured in every travel story and post since it has a permanent home in my travel case.

As we toured the facility, one of my highlights was walking the timeline wall that featured the evolution of the Gillette brand and the razors they developed along the way. It is there listed under the 1990s that I spotted her. The Sensor For Women, the first razor designed by a woman for women, and the first razor I ever owned. This razor was the start of Gillette getting serious about women’s razors and after 100 years of razor experience, the officially launched the Gillette Venus line in 2001. Since then Gillette Venus has become the #1 selling female razor brand in the world.

After a walk through the timeline gallery we had breakfast with the Gillette Venus team and took a deeper look at three of their top selling razors, the Venus Snap, Venus Swirl and Venus and Olay. Some key points:

Venus Snap

The portable, mini-razor, with a full-size refillable Venus Embrace blade head offers an instant smoothness for anyone on the go. The Venus Embrace blade cartridge has 5 blades surrounded by protective ribbon of moisture for glide. I’ve been using the Venus Snap razor since it was in blue packaging, now it’s in pink with the included matching portable plastic compact. For anyone who used the blue in the past, it’s the same razor, just a new color. Compact in it’s case, this is the razor you want for your travel and gym bag.

Venus Swirl

With high precision engineering for the next generation of pivoting, the Venus Swirl features FLEXIBALL technology (the silver ball you see in the middle of the razor) that moves in multiple directions to give a unique multi-dimensional glide from side to side. It took 5 years and over 7,000 legs shaved to develop this razor, which moves with the contours of your body to help you effortlessly shave over tricky areas like knees and ankles. It also features thinner blades so it requires less force to cut more hair for a comfortable shave. And automatically adjusts to different levels of shaving pressure and body contours, helping to further increase shaving comfort.

Venus & Olay

Taking convenience to a whole new level, the Venus & Olay features five blades and a built-in Olay shave gel bar for the ultimate 2 in 1 razor that’s great for anyone that still just uses water to shave. This is actually the same blade used in the Venus Snap just with the added Olay Moisture Bar which has skin-conditioning elements found in Olay products: Petrolatum and Glycerin help lock in skin’s moisture. No other shave cream is required.

Venus Breeze

gillette-venus-olay

Gillette Venus also offers the Venus Breeze razor which is a similar concept to the Venus & Olay in that it has a built in shave gel bar. The main difference is the Venus Breeze has a 3 blade razor vs. Venus &Olay which has a 5 blade cartridge. General rule, more blades offer a smoother, safer shave. And the built in moisture bar doesn’t use the Olay technology. On the upside it’s a little more affordable than the Venus & Olay razor.

Some shaving tips I picked up…

  • Change your razor heads every 10 to 12 shaves.
  • Use moisturizer pre and post shave to prep skin. Some women even use mens pre-shave oil to loosen the hairs and prevent irritation.
  • Thinner, finer blades like the one in the Venus Swirl are ideal for the bikini area
  • Use shaving cream (or at the very least body wash, conditioner or something!) when shaving. Straight water does not give as close of a shave and isn’t as good for skin/hair removal.
  • Store your razor outside the line of water (it can be in the shower but keep it out of direct contact with the shower head, especially the Venus & Olay razor).
  • Going with the grain is recommended for shaving, but going against the grain results in a closer shave so it’s up to personal preference.

To develop any of these razors, there’s a lot that goes into the research phase — they actually go into women’s homes to watch how they shave.

Getting to see my Dad and little brother (who celebrates his birthday on Monday) was such a special treat this week when I was in town for a press trip in Boston. We did a pre-Father’s Day celebration on the water since I won’t be with them this weekend. They help inspire my guides since my dad is impossible to shop for and has coined the term “It’s not that I don’t like it, I just don’t appreciate it”. Like most of us as we get older and are trying to cut out the clutter gifts we can’t use or have a million of get old. It’s my goal every season is to pick things he can actually appreciate — his only rule in my attempts are that ties are not allowed. And fortunately I have my brother Andrew to run my ideas by as well as some stylish dads and mens bloggers I seek for approval. Top picks include…

Sunglass Hut x Refinery29 Sunnies & Selfies #ShadesOfYou

Charlie and I had a blast this morning at the Refinery29 x Sunglass Hut “Sunnies & Selfies” Shades of You Pop-up event in Washington Square Park in NYC. Highly selfie-able sets and all the latest and greatest shades from Sunglass Hut are on display for guests to try on and pose with. georgia may jagger PM

Charlie made friends with our host, Georgia May Jagger who was sweet enough to put his story up on her Instagram page. And now he’s getting adoption inquiries in her comments — too bad he’s taken!
My little rescue has come a long way in 2 months from a kill shelter to this bombshell’s arms. He had such a hard time getting adopted because of his age but hopefully this inspires more people to adopt.

Dogs are a big commitment though, unlike sunglasses! Which if you’re in town today, the pop-up is open to the public from 3-7pm by the fountain in Washington Square Park!

Sunglass Hut and Refinery29 are also hosting another Sunnies & Selfies event on June 24th in Herald Square Park from 10am – 4pm.

Happy summer everyone!

Maybelline Color Sensational Loaded Bolds Lipstick Collection

maybelline-loaded-bolds-lipsticl

Maybelline is launching 20 incredibly lipstick shades as part of their new Color Sensational Loaded Bolds Lipstick collection. High pigment, creamy finish with high intensity, opaque nudes, browns, reds and a series of dark purples to navy. I’m especially excited about shade #750 Wickedly White which is a great base for any dark shade you want to lighten and have pop! It’s also an amazing tool to help ombre your lips –and can give almost a lip liner effect with only one shade on top. I’ll do a video soon since there’s a lot that can be done with a white base coat.

Pictured above I’m wearing shade #810 Fiery Fuchsia (you know how I love a good fuchsia!). The collection officially launches in stores July 2016 for $7.49 but is currently available on Ulta.com. Swatches below of the whole collection!

It’s been another go-go week for me with no signs of slowing down. Last week it was Providence and Boston and now I’m on a train to DC. I shot this in my 2 day stint in New York.  I’m going through a major neutral phase, I even took my forever bold lip down a few notches and have been wearing the new limited edition Gucci Lip Luxurious Moisture Rich Lipstick in shade Lilac, that’s part of the spring/summer collection. I haven’t found my perfect nude quite yet and this shade satisfies that itch. It’s very natural on and the formula is really light and moisturizing with a subtle pop of purple.

I’ve also been wearing my Gigi New York Chelsea Crossbody from last fashion week more now that it’s summer. It’s that perfect size and I’m a sucker for anything with my initials and my new Timex Fairfield Weekender watch in Rose Gold. It’s actually unisex and one of my favorites on both James and me (we share it). It’s a clean design and just perfect — they seem to be sold out of this particular strap — they have more of the colorful ones on their site, but hopefully they are back in stock soon! I’m also not a big fringe person but fell for this faux suede top from Forever 21. I think I’m channeling my inner Pocahontas –either that or music festival season is rubbing off. My jeans are also from Forever 21 and the distressed boyfriend cut is my perfect fit.

PVDFest Providence Diaries

I had an awesome time in Providence over the weekend. The city celebrated it’s second annual PVDfest which is a four day, multi-arts festival that takes place over the public spaces, parts and outdoor spaces of Providence. Live music, dance, parades take over the streets — here’s just a taste of the parade!

It was such a cool experience and a great way to get a taste of all the creativity that’s oozing out of the city. The local restaurants were out serving drinks, and the vendors we’re out. We stopped in The Rosendale for drinks and lunch. Their Maestro Picante infused with jalapeno drink and banana infused shots are not to be missed (it tastes like desert!). Their menu is pretty spectacular as well – traditional bar food with a twist.

Stay Here: Renaissance Hotel Providence Downtown

renaissance-hotel

Over the weekend I visited Providence for PVDFest, which celebrates the arts in all forms. Live music, dance, parades and visual art lines the streets for the four day festival. Perfectly located in downtown Providence, with a nothing of a walk from the train station (just a few blocks), we stayed at the Renaissance Hotel. As part of our stay they took us on a tour of the historic building turned ultra modern hotel which originated as a Masonic temple in the 1920s (the blueprints still reside on it’s walls).

With a grandiose lobby, extremely friendly and helpful staff the hotel features 9 floors, 264 rooms, 8 suites with 46 different variations of layouts to match your needs.

I stayed in beautiful room number 935 on the top floor with up an unbelievable view of the State House. Featuring the most comfortable king size bed, desk, and television, which I was too busy exploring to watch it was a very welcoming stay. I also loved the sign in the bathroom which read, “Think less, live more.”

Other amenities of the hotel included fitness center, meeting rooms, club lounge. As well as high speed internet for the rooms and complimentary wireless in all lobby and public areas. The hotel also featured a downstairs bar and restaurant called Public Kitchen.

Add this to the NYC to-do list: Samsung 837 Experience

SamsungEvent20160406PhillipAngert

If you haven’t visited the Samsung’s flagship store, 837 in the Meatpacking district, add it to your list. Especially if you have people in town visiting. It’s an experiential space (as in they don’t sell merchandise or do repairs), where you purely go to experience and test out all the Samsung offerings and virtual reality launches. And also hosting an amazing series of events! I was totally booked Thursday night and am devastated I missed Diplo performing. Although Charlie did get to meet Jeremy Scott and Paris Hilton thanks to our friends at Moroccanoil and the Daily Front Row so rest assured we had our reasons. Although I die for breathing the same air as that hunk.

In addition to the amazing lineup of chefs, artists and creatives they have coming through the store is all of the experiences inside including the virtual reality roller coaster — where you put the VR headset on and sit in a moving chair that makes you feel like you’re on the real thing. There’s also a photobooth that pixilates and reflects your image over the giant screen in the store — you can see below mine with my dad from when he visited New York.

Bluemercury opens in TriBeCa

Last night, Charlie and I had a blast at the Bluemercury store opening in TriBeCa! The beauty mecca had an incredible turnout and the store is beautiful.  I’m a huge fan of their founder and CEO Marla Malcolm Beck (photoed above with me) and remember when they first opened in NYC.

inside-bluemercury-tribecaThis store marks their 96th location in the US — it’s just incredible what she and her team has done. While I’ve been in my fair share of their stores, this may be my favorite location yet; it’s one of their bigger ones at 2,000 square feet with tall ceilings and that clean, open boutique feel that they are known for.

georgie-beauty-eyelashes-bluemercury

What makes Bluemercury so great in addition to the feel when you walk in, and wonderful staff is the product curation –it’s fantastic! They have so many of my favorite brands from NARS, Nest, Chanel, Moroccanoil, Mario Badescu, fresh, skinceuticals, smith+cult, Bliss… the list is endless and spans makeup, skincare, nails, hair, tools bath and body. But there is always more to discover! Charlie and I played at the Georgie Beauty Lash Bar — and picked up the

Top SPF Picks For Summer

spf-top-picks

SPF, SPF, SPF is what every beauty expert should be chanting in your ear year round and undoubtably this summer. It’s undoubtably our #1 beauty must-have and the best anti-aging defense you can have. If there’s one thing we saw this week is that the sun is no joke! So I’ve rounded up my favorite SPF’s for the summer so no matter what your complaint — it’s too oily, heavy, It has a white cast… these are my fool-proof picks from head to toe — and even for your pet!

Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Defense SPF 45 – This is the SPF I like to keep in my purse and travel with since it’s only 1oz and use when I’m not wearing any makeup. It goes on sheer, soaks up my oils and dries almost matte. If you are going to layer anything on top, make sure to put this on prior to your moisturizer to avoid pilling. Although I prefer any number of SPF’s on my list more for when I’m layering products on top.

Paula’s Choice Resist Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50 – Probably one of my favorite SPF’s of all time, it comes out like water and is so hydrating on skin and then packs a serious SPF 50. It’s the lightest SPF I own and like all Paula’s Choice products is 100% fragrance free and great for sensitive skin.

La Prairie Cellular Swiss UV Protection Veil SPF 50 – Leave it to La Prairie to make you feel glamorous while putting on SPF. From the packaging to the application, it’s perfection. It can be used over your moisturizer, goes on smooth and sheer without any aftermath. It’s the furthest thing from greasy or messy and gives skin a very pretty sheen.

BeautyRX By Dr. Schultz Solar Defense Sheer Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 – goes on like a creamy lotion and then dries and absorbs beautifully. No white residue and is a great SPF for under your makeup. I’m a big Dr. Schultz fan and his formulas and this is one that’s great for all skin types.
