Boston’s MFA features Avedon and Scaasi

Dovima with Elephants

Fresh off the plane from San Francisco, I had an eventful week in Boston between the Catwalk for a Cure breast cancer awareness event and Natural Products Expo East trade show featuring keynote speaker Alicia Silverstone (I’ll post more on both experiences shortly). For now, as a museum and fashion enthusiast I want to talk about two great exhibits currently being showcased at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston: Avedon Fashion 1944-2000 (on display from Aug 10, 2010 – Jan 17, 2011) and Scaasi: American Couturier (on display from September 25 2010 – Jun 19, 2011).

Photographs by Richard Avedon

Avedon Fashion 1944-2000 – I first saw this exhibit last year, when it was on display at the ICP in NY. It doesn’t get old with time. Richard Avendon’s work is both iconic as you walk the decades of his peices and breath taking in his muses, the scenery and of course the fashion in his photography.  Don’t miss this opportunity to see Dovima with Elephants, amongst so many more classics.

By Arnold Scassi

Scassi: American Couturier – I wasn’t so familiar with Arnold Scassi’s designs when I walked into the exhibit. However, with all of his prestige over so

Legendary Fashion Photographer Irving Penn Dies at 92

Celebrated photographer Irving Penn died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan at the age of 92.   Considered one of the most influential fashion photographers of the 20th century, Penn’s global notoriety began in 1943 when he started working at Vogue.

“In my career, I have met no one else who worked with the level of imaginative intensity and economy of Irving Penn,” said Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. “His photographs were as exquisite and electrifying in the last year of his life as they were in 1943, when he started contributing to Vogue. To have been a colleague and friend of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century is a privilege greater than I could have ever imagined.”

Growing up, both Richard Avedon and Irving Penn captured everything I loved about fashion and brought such beauty and elegance to every shot they released.   When I read the headlines of Penn’s passing this morning, I could not help but feel very sentimental.  His photographs have deeply moved me and I appreciate them so much.  Rest in peace Irving Penn.

He had me at Dovima with Elephants.   Richard Avedon’s body of work is truly stunning — he reinvented fashion photography delving into the realm of art.  The exhibit travels back in time expanding the evolution of fashion through his lens.  The photographs are extraordinary and well displayed covering over five decades of his work on two floors of the ICP.  Carve out a decent amount of time to view this exhibit.  A worthy must see!
