Smith & Cult Founder Dineh Mohajer Gives Us a Sneak Peek at the Fall 2017 Collection

Confession: I have a major girl crush on Dineh Mohajer. She’s the co-founder of Smith & Cult but also fun fact… the original founder of Hard Candy, and those pastel square nail polishes with the gummy rings on top, which I used to compulsively buy at Urban Outfitters as a teenager — so the inner teenager in me actually freaks out every time she’s in town and I get to share the same air space as her. Since she sold it to LVMH, it’s a totally different brand now with meh packaging, she launched her newer venture of Smith & Cult in 2014. Originally a nail polish brand (their packaging is epic!), they launched lip and eye over the past year and this year expanded into face! Their top sellers are actually The Tainted Lip Stain shade, Kissing Tiny Flower, followed by 1972, the rose gold nail polish that made headlines for them (Byrdie reported it sold out in less than 8 hours for them).

I recently joined Dineh and the team in NYC to celebrate and play with their new Fall 2017 collection. This collection features all new shade extensions in almost all of their existing categories, which is super exciting. I’ve only played with half the collection, the rest I swatched at the event for sneak peek at what’s to come later this month!

Book of Sun, “Chapter 2”, $40

A blush and bronzer duo that features a rosette shade and a toasted taupe for a vibrant and glowing complexion. Full disclosure, I only played with this at the event so I don’t have an official opinion yet but I did get to swatch it!

Urban Decay turns up the Heat

Urban Decay is seriously turning up the heat on their beloved Naked eyeshadow collection with their latest ‘Heat’ palette.  The fiery eyeshadow palette includes 12 brand new shades including 7 matte colors and 5 shimmering pigments. The colors range from amber-hued neutrals, burnt oranges and reddish browns to glimmering coppers and sultry bronzes.

Murad Retinol Youth Renewal & Beauty Spray Launch

Probably one of the biggest perks of the job is getting to meet with some of our favorite brands and see products that aren’t even out yet! We’re big fans of Dr. Murad, and the skincare brand which is adding some new products to their powerhouse Resurgence collection! Thanks to their breakthrough Tri-Active technology, their new Retinol Youth Renewal products contain a fast-acting retinoid that accelerates anti-aging results by giving your cellular turnover a super boost. Allow me to decode: Basically its time released retinol that acts like a magnet to enhance your skin’s receptivity to the benefits of retinol. So not only are you getting a product formulated with retinol, you’re getting a product that helps your skin enhance the effects of it! And we’re all about Retinol at night so color us excited! The new launch includes a Retinol Youth Renewal Night Cream and the Retinol Youth Renewal Eye Serum, as well as a new one-of-a kind product.

Fenty Beauty is Coming!

Rihanna fenty beauty

Rihanna pretty much summed it up on her instagram that come Friday, September 8th, 2017 Fenty Beauty will be launching exclusively at Sephora, Sephora.com and FentyBeauty.com.

I also may or may not have seen the packaging during Paris Fashion week. If I did it may look something along the lines of KKW Beauty meets pastel packaging if I’m correct. I was awkwardly peaking it in a certain makeup artists collection (all the while freaking out!). For all I know I could be totally wrong, I do after all have the memory of a 5 year old. Lets see if I’m right come September. I’m excited!

Tish and Snooky Celebrate Manic Panic’s 40th “Manniversary”

Tish and Snooky of Manic Panic with Lara Eurdolian at CITY ICMAD awards in las vegasOkay hello teenage nostalgia! Just the mere site of Manic Panic’s packaging takes me back to middle school and shopping Hot Topic. When it came to funky hair dye there was only Manic Panic and maybe it’s below par alternative of Kool aid in my time! The iconic brand recently celebrated their 40th anniversary, or as the founders dubbed it, their “manniversary.” Founded by punk rock visionaries, sister duo Tish and Snooky who hello used to be backup singers for Blondie!!! The bad-ass sisters, Tish and Snooky proudly rung in their fortieth year of creating iconic hair color and bold color cosmetics.

I’ve been following them for some quite time and actually missed the big celebration last week in New York, but got my fan-girl moment out this weekend at Cosmoprof in Las Vegas during the ICMAD CITY Awards where I was one of the judges. I obviously knew in advance that they were one of the winners but not that they would be accepting the award in person so that was epic for me — And they are every bit as fabulous as you’d expect.

Rodarte Paris Couture Week with Morgan Taylor Lacquer

I don’t know if I’ve ever experienced anything as magical as the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2018 fashion show during Couture Week in Paris. The Mulleavy sisters really brought it for their first showing in Paris. No detail was left unturned.

For this trip I was with the nail sponsor for the show, Morgan Taylor Lacquer, and had the pleasure of joining in on the nail tests and getting to watch their lead artist, Tracylee Percival in action. I’ve known Tracylee for years, she’s the best of the best but getting to watch her vision come to life… she’s a genius and an incredible artist. Just look at this look she created using real flowers — and my small part in bringing her vision to life!

Proenza Schouler Paris Couture Week with Morgan Taylor

Paris for Couture Week is like nothing I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve done Paris and New York Fashion Week on repeat. For this trip I was with the Morgan Taylor Lacquer team, who traveled to do the nails for Proenza Schouler and Rodarte’s Couture Week shows. Here’s a quick video from behind the scenes and also at the show for Proenza Schouler (I’ll have a video up soon on Rodarte!). It was really cool to be apart of the nail tests, which is when the nail team joins the hair and makeup team before the show at the designer’s studio they they can test and make the final decisions on the beauty look.

We did our beauty test the day before the Proenza Schouler show. Based on the designers vision, Morgan Taylor lead artist, Vu Nguyen along with Taylor Daniel (or as I like to call her THE Taylor of Morgan Taylor), put forth some dark reds and burgundies, as well as some variations of nudes with different top coats. Ultimately they settled on their deep burgundy, “Take the Lead” shade for some of the models and the others were met with just a single coat of “Matte’s A Wrap” over a well manicured nail for a more minimalist look.

It was a modern take on a minimalist look with the matte top coat, while the deep burgundy choice was all about going against the grain for spring (move over pastels) and challenging tradition.

Then came show day, and right down to the invitations the show was gorgeous (see photo above and shop my jewelry HERE). Set at the Lycée Jacques-Decour, a school built in the 19th century, the label sent down beautiful prints, slim fit dresses with cut outs, straps, and texture down the runway to a dramatic beat (I’m sorry I had to cut the music, Youtube is a challenge with any music you don’t have the rights to), but you can catch the show finale in the video above.
