Last week, I had the pleasure of joining Women’s Health Magazine in celebration of their 2013 Beauty Awards. Breaking their usual format of presenting the products, the publication instead hosted a social media panel highlighting the role social networks play on both the launch and success of beauty products in the marketplace.
Moderated by Michele Promaulayko, Editor-in-Chief of Women’s Health, the panel included, Debra Ann Bednar, Global Director of Strategy & Growth for Creative Solutions, FACEBOOK, Ria Tobaccowala, Lifestyle Partnerships Lead, GOOGLE+, Danielle Macaluso, Assistant Vice President of Public Relations, L’Oreal Paris, Rachael Ostrom, Executive Director, Consumer Engagement, Aveda Corporation and Chris Rackliffe, Senior Social Media Editor, Women’s Health.
The group covered the core basics for successfully engaging in the marketplace. Key points being: 1. Diversify your channels, each platform should have a different social strategy. 2. Figure out a style guide for your brand voice and be consistent. 3. The importance mobile and visuals play as part of your strategy. 4. Stay-up-to-date… from observing the competition to reading top social sites like mashable, evolve with social media (because it’s always changing). And lastly (and something I always tell my clients), social media isn’t free, it’s important to invest in your channels (whether it’s by advertising or forming strategic partnerships) and your goals should not be solely sales driven as much as connecting with consumers and developing online relationships.
Now for the fun stuff… who won!
One thing I love about how Women’s Health did their beauty awards is they breakdown the editor’s choice and reader’s choice as two different categories. And then pick products based on the best if you’re on vacation, after hours, at the gym, at work, and every social moment, since products aren’t always a one time fits all. Many of the products I have tried, even more that I haven’t and this inspires me to update my beauty wish list.
