We get it, all those perfect girls on the cover of magazines and in fancy advertisements ARE indeed photoshopped but does that make us feel any better about ourselves? (And I confess if given a preference on Instagram to use a look enhancing filter, I take it — who doesn’t?)
While doctored images make real life insecurities easier to deal with in the cyber world, what’s the effect in reality? Often times it leads to self esteem issues and less self acceptance. If that’s the case, you’re not alone. We all need some encouragement from time to time and that is exactly what Dove is setting out to do.
On March 8th, Dove is celebrating International Women’s Day by launching an Ad Makeover campaign in the US taking on advertising that can negatively impact self-esteem. The Dove® Ad Makeover, passes the power of advertising to women, by empowering them to send positive messages (sayings like, “Your birthday suit suits you” or “Everybody is beautiful”), to other women through a Facebook app, found at www.facebook.com/dove. This app has the potential to, once again, reach millions of females with positive messages and give women the unique chance to spread positive advertising across the U.S.
You can also tweet @Dove starting on 3/8 using the hash tag #admakeover to show your support of the campaign.
So get to it and lets make someone’s day!
