Get Red? Try Dermalogica’s Redness Relief

A few months ago my good friend Laura came to me for a recommendation on how to fight redness. Having tried a series of disappointing products, I asked her to review Dermalogica’s new Calming Redness Relief SPF 20 form their UltraCalming collection on my behalf. Here’s what she had to say:

Having fair skin and light features, I’m no stranger to having a bit of underlying redness in my skin. Although it doesn’t quite qualify as roseaca, it’s enough to make me self-conscious at times and certainly not the way I want to present myself.

I have tried several products in the past to address this issue, DDF Redness Relief Gel and Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting Primer (green) to name a few, but to be honest I wasn’t impressed with any of them. Now in the heart of summer I was really excited to sample something new and give Dermalogica’s Calming Redness Relief SPF 20 a try.

As I first applied it on my face I thought, OMG I look like a smurf! And as much as I love those little blue characters, I certainly don’t want to look like one!  Although, while it does initially give your skin a light blue/green tint, once absorbed its not as noticeable. The consistency is a bit tacky so I found it best to apply quickly on the skin for an even distribution. It contain an SPF 20 which is convenient and appreciated since UV rays can trigger, worsen and prolong inflammation and accompany redness. The directions do state that it can be worn alone, although for best results I recommend wearing it under a liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer. Although make sure the Redness Relief has completely dried before applying your foundation, otherwise it may look a bit cakey.

Formulated to relieve both short-term and long-term redness, it contains active botanical ingredients including Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Saccharomyces Lysate Extract, Bisabolol, and Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract that interrupt the inflammation cascade and scavenge free radicals, helping to prevent future long-term damage.

Overall this product is the best I’ve tried and most effective to calm the redness in my skin. I could especially tell a difference in photographs; my skin tone just looks more even and flawless.  I will definitely continue to use this product.
