Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s all about family and being grateful for everything we have. Then immediately after we hit Black Friday/Cyber Monday which is about as consumerist as it gets. We go from being grateful for all that we have to this complete 180 of we need more! And a lot more. So much more because how can we not at these great deals. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good sale as much as the next person, it just has always felt a little aggressive to me (especially now that the deals are starting as early as 6pm on Thanksgiving day). Which is why I’m glad we’ve seen such a big push this year for Giving Tuesday!
On December 1st, the day after Cyber Monday, you can join the global celebration of generosity. As the organization leading the charge put it, we have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back.
The idea is simple. Find a way for you, your family, community, company or organization can come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving (if it’s on social, use the #givingtuesday).
For anyone looking for ideas, I’m a member of New York Cares which offers endless opportunities to give back, from tutoring kids, to volunteering in soup kitchens, they offer endless opportunities no matter if you have a few hours of your time to spare or can commit to a regular schedule.
As for me, I do volunteer regularly but unfortunately today I will be on an airplane so my options are limited. So, I’m rounding up my unused beauty and hygiene products and donating them to woman in need. As some of you know I confounded the Share Your Beauty program which does collections of new beauty and hygiene products and delivers them to shelters and teen centers in NYC and the tri-state area. For anyone interested in donating you can learn more HERE.
Also a number of brands are doing wonderful give-back programs. Old Navy is offering customers two ways to give back. From December 1 through December 7, customers are invited to snap a selfie or a photo of friends and family doing good deeds, then share on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #UNSelfie and tagging @oldnavy. Each photo will trigger a $1 donation from Old Navy that will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Additionally, when customers shop with their Old Navy (or other Gap Inc. brand) credit card at Old Navy stores on GivingTuesday, the brand will donate 1 percent of customers’ total spend to benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Happy #GivingTuesday everyone!
